Maryland Council for History Education

If you can hear the beat of drums from other times...

    from other places;

    ...if you believe knowledge of history is essential for sound judgements in personal and public life;

      ...if you think the study of history should begin in elementary school ...but never end;

      ...then we need you in the Maryland Council for History Education and in the National Council for History Education!

Goals and Accomplishments:

The Maryland Counci for History Education is an organization that works to enhance the quality of history education in the state of Maryland. Working in conjunction with the National Council for History Education, MCHE brings together middle and high school teachers, historical museums, and university historians to emphasize the importance of history and to exchange content and ideas on teaching history. To facilitate this dialogue the council has sponsored two conferences.

  • "Tragedy and Triumph in History" - In March 1997 at The United States Naval Academy our first conference was highlighted by presentations given by Dr. Spencer Crew, Director of the Smithsonian Museum of American History, and Dr. Charles Christian, University of Maryland College Park.
  • "Migrations in History" - The second conference in March 1998, also at the Naval Academy featured Dr. Libby Haight O'Connell of The History Channel and Dr. John Jeffries from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Upcoming Events:

"Turning Points in History," The Maryland Council for History Education's third Annual Conference. May 1, 1999 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. More details to follow!
