ABOUT THE MARYLAND COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL STUDIES

The Maryland Council for Social Studies (MDCSS) is dedicated to the promotion and support of social studies education in Maryland and the United States. MDCSS works to build a community of social studies educators in the state of Maryland, and through this network advance cultural understanding, respect for human differences, and an appreciation of diversity. MDCSS provides high quality professional development and instructional resources for Maryland social studies teachers and works to recognize excellence in social studies instruction at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

This year, MCDSS explores "Integrating Civics in the Social Studies."

With a contentious general election on the horizon, ongoing political polarization, and an apparent downturn in peoples' ability to communicate effectively across differences, social studies educators find ourselves increasingly pressed to address the country's civic needs. This year's theme seeks to explore the ways in which social studies educators try to broach important civic topics and build students' civic knowledge and skills.

Join us in Columbia, MD for a day of sessions and special presentations devoted to helping social studies educators from all grade levels and content areas address the pressing challenges of informed and engaged democratic citizenship.
